The Lead Safe Mama, LLC parent advocacy community, an international group of more than 20,000 parents fighting for childhood Lead-poisoning prevention and consumer goods safety – especially in products manufactured for use by children – was responsible for their third product Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) product recall this calendar year: The Stainless Steel Insulated [Leaded] Green Sprouts baby bottles for which the CPSC published a recall notice on November 23, 2022.
This is the second Lead-contaminated baby bottle that the Lead Safe Mama, LLC community got successfully recalled in 2022 (with the third product recall being for an indoor jumping toy).
Lead Safe Mama, LLC does independent consumer goods testing in a community collaborative business model. Parents send products in to Lead Safe Mama, LLC (a woman-owned small business based in Portland, Oregon with a unique business model – in which the readership of the LeadSafeMama.com website both directs (helps to choose) which products are tested, and also helps to cover the cost of the independent testing and analysis – conducted using XRF technology, by Tamara Rubin, owner of Lead Safe Mama, LLC.)
The first Lead Safe Mama, LLC 2022-initiated CPSC product recall was in July of 2022 for the Jungle Jumparoo toy, which was found to be painted with high-Lead paint. The hazardous nature of this product was first reported on LeadSafeMama.com in December of 2020.
The second Lead Safe Mama, LLC-initiated 2022 product recall was in August of 2022 — glass baby bottles painted with Lead paint (manufactured by NUK). The concerns for Lead paint on NUK’s glass baby bottles [Made in Germany] were first reported on LeadSafeMama.com in February of 2019, and then again in June of 2021.
The third Lead Safe Mama, LLC-initiated 2022 product recall (the current one for Green Sprouts’ products in November of 2022) was first reported on LeadSafeMama.com on September 19, 2022 – more than two months prior to the recall being published by the CPSC.
Lead Safe Mama, LLC has reported many other products to the CPSC after finding Lead hazards in these products. Most of the products that Lead Safe Mama, LLC has found to have unsafe Levels of Lead have not yet been recalled by the CPSC. These products include additional Lead-painted baby bottles currently (now or at some point in 2022) being manufactured or sold by Lansinoh; Nuk; Pigeon; Tabor Place, and others. We encourage the public to follow the work of Lead Safe Mama, LLC if they want to know about product recalls (specifically for products that have unsafe levels of Lead) — typically months (or sometimes even years) before the CPSC formally issues a recall.
Important to note regarding the current recall, this is not the first product that Green Sprouts has manufactured that has had unsafe levels of Lead. Their earlier product (a glass sippy cup insert with Lead painted measurement markings made in sold in 2017 and thereabouts) was never formally officially recalled by the CPSC.
The history and details for each of these recalls (in addition to each of the products that have not yet been formally recalled) can be found on LeadSafeMama.com, by putting the brand name of the product in the search bar on the website.
