“Is it bigger than a bread box?”

And a little story to go with it!…

So…. we heard a rat (we initially thought it might be a squirrel) in our wall for a couple of days this past week (ah – the “Benefits” of living in an old [b.1905] house in a densely-populated city, eh?! “Wildlife” everywhere !)

And then yesterday it appeared “someone” (not anyone in the family) had “gotten into” the bread in the kitchen (chewing right through the plastic bag it was in!) So – last night – I ordered this (aflink) because I never want this to happen again (so gross!)

But THANKFULLY, we also have FOUR AMAZING CATS [my Mom brought two of them into our family – as “wild” kittens from our family farm – more than a decade ago, specifically to help in this area!] and this morning they left a “lovely present” on our doorstep — a giant dead rat (and the wall in our bedroom is notably quiet for the moment (crossed fingers!))

I share this story because I cannot believe that up to this point in my life (nearly 52 years old, and having been a parent for more than a quarter of a century), I never considered buying a bread box. I have always just left the bread on the counter in the bag it came in until it was ravenously devoured by the children (normally in less than a day — since my four sons are each already towering giants in their teens or older! lol) Does this (buying a bread box?) mean I am a grown-up now?

Note: Of course, I will test it for Lead (and other toxicants) once it arrives, but – based on the materials – I expect it to be Lead-free! I chose this particular one because…

  • it is made mostly of relatively “natural” (compostable?) materials (bamboo)
  • and because it has magnetic closures on the doors (a nice practical touch)
  • plus, it is two-tier and provides space for larger things below
  • and the two tiers are integrated / held together by the sides, which is not the case with all of the options when you search for “bread box” on Amazon. [I couldn’t have a two tier one where the tiers are not permanent attached because my kids would inevitably knock the top half onto the ground!]

I plan to continue to keep any bread products in their bags in this box (so I don’t have any concerns about the bread sitting on the bamboo (or any surface finish that might be used). And yes…my new bread box is officially “bigger than a bread box” https://amzn.to/3Hx0gR3 , Lol!

Another note: Would I have preferred a completely hand-made one, made entirely from natural solid, unfinished locally- and sustainably-harvested organic wood (with glass windows) made by a local artisan? Sure… but I expect something like that would be far out of my price range at this point in my life – and I needed an immediate solution to rat-proof my kitchen counter…in case our murine interloper managed to recommend our establishment to any friends or relatives in the vicinity before encountering our efficient feline sentries!

  1. I love this! Now that I see some metal baskets have lead this would be a great alternative! Can’t wait to see your test results! I got a bamboo drawer divider but sent it back as the glue they used contained formaldehyde. I found a much better one with no formaldehyde. Have to dig around sometimes to find the most natural stuff!

    1. Hi Linda! Could you share the link to the one you ended up purchasing? I’m looking for a drawer divider.

      1. I’m so sorry I just saw this. It is called Luxano Bamboo Drawer Organizer for $33.95. I don’t know how to copy the link. It has really good reviews.

  2. Yeah. That bread box is a silly item for sure. But another health concern is now keeping more than say 2 cats. Toxoplasmosis affects every human adversely not just pregnant women.
