Day #3 of “Summer with the Rubin Brothers”
We had a really busy day working! We cleaned the house and built and fixed shelves and moved furniture – all trying to get ready to GET OUT OF TOWN (!) for a cross country drive on August 1st. I think tomorrow (today already, Sunday – July 5th) we will rest (no chores for a moment!) and focus on painting some more decorations on the house. [Weekends are the best times to stay home during the Zombie Apocalypse as there are too many people out and about (enjoying the sunshine, the beach, the parks and the river) for it to be safe with all of the immune-compromised people in my family!]
The kids played music for the neighborhood this afternoon and then there were fireworks in the street (all the kids in the neighborhood seemed to have them this year, we just did our best to stay away from the smoke and make sure it was blowing away from us).
This was the first year we were in town for the Fourth of July and didn’t go to the river for the big city fireworks celebration. This is the first year in the past 8 (?) or 10 years that we did not have one or more kiddos performing jazz at the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival (either on the Main Stage or at one or more events in conjunction with the Festival.) It’s an interesting time for sure. My boys had something like 50 or 75 music gigs (combined) cancelled as a result of the pandemic.
The picture below is dinner tonight (midway through the fireworks and music celebrations). Left to right: Avi (15), A.J. (17), Colescott (23), Charlie (11). One of the reasons all the boys are home this summer (besides #CoViD19) is because – with three July birthdays – they wanted to spend their birthdays together at home one last time (probably the last year this will happen in their lifetimes – given 2020 will see us with only two boys left living at home come Fall!) A.J. and Colescott are moving to Boston together in September. Colescott just finished school at Berklee College of Music and A.J. is just about to start at Berklee and they are planning on living together in Boston starting in the fall. They are each so incredibly helpful with their little brothers, we are really going to miss them – but we are super excited for all that is possible in their future.
Stay safe out there.
I hope you enjoyed your holiday.
