iPads are on sale today on Amazon!
iPads are Lead-free in all accessible components. [Apple has pretty good toxicant standards across the board!] My understanding is that iPads are also likely Lead-free in the internal (inaccessible) components, but I have not disassembled one for testing (yet!)
We use iPads in our home.
My husband and I are former consultants for Apple (we were some of the founding members of Apple’s “Apple Consultants Network” many years ago) and are (and always have been) big fans of Apple products. I actually started doing consulting projects with Apple computers when I was just about 17 years old (in 1986/1987!) We only have Apple computers and phones in our home and businesses.
As a result, four years ago when we were making a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Europe (Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany) we “caved” (from our general stand in limiting our children’s digital media usage) and bought our two youngest children each iPad “minis”. Charlie and Avi were 8 and 11 years old at the time and this purchase seemed like a good move to keep them busy for a long plane-ride on a trip to Europe (plus all the driving we did around Europe over two weeks too!)
We do keep them locked up most of the time (the iPads, not the kids 😉 ) – and they often disappear from view for months at a time (which keeps them novel for the kids when we pull them back out again!), but – since we work at home and our kids are often home too – we use them when we have important meetings or other times when the kids need a distraction and we don’t have childcare but we cannot be interrupted (and also for long road trips – whenever they happen!)
I think iPads are a good tool as long as they are not used every day. They also have so much well-designed educational software that the kids enjoy using. In addition to games, photography and movies – our main use of iPads and iPhones with our kids is books-on-tape (audio books), which have really saved us given Avi has a brain injury from being Lead poisoned and cannot read at grade level.

But alas, they are among the worst brands for high rf/radiation emissions. As well as human rights, due to where they maintain their factories and the mining exposure to high amounts of pollutants.
