When tested with an XRF instrument the Goldentop.Ca mug – made in Canada (sent to me by a reader in Canada) had the following readings:

1) On a part with the scope focused primarily on the decorative elements:

  • Lead (Pb): 13,100 +/- 300 ppm
  • Arsenic (As): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Cadmium (Cd): 416 +/- 22 ppm
  • Mercury (Hg): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Antimony (Sb): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Barium (Ba): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Chromium (Cr): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Selenium (Se): Non-Detect / Negative

2) On a part with only the white background glaze of the mug:

  • Lead (Pb): 35 +/- 12 ppm
  • Arsenic (As): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Cadmium (Cd): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Mercury (Hg): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Antimony (Sb): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Barium (Ba): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Chromium (Cr): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Selenium (Se): Non-Detect / Negative

PLEASE NOTE:

All tests were done for a minimum of 30 seconds each – using a freshly calibrated Niton XRF instrument (an XL3T XRF testing in “consumer goods” mode). Tests were repeated multiple times on each component to confirm the results. All test results reported on this blog are science-based, accurate and replicable.

Even though the high Lead component is “only” on the outside of the mug, I still do not recommend having functional food-use items like this (with lead-painted decorative exteriors) in your home. Inevitably – on items like this the exterior paint and coating wears. It takes just a microscopic amount of lead (literally an invisible amount of Lead) to poison a human and cause long-term neurological damage and other health impairments. The potential risk of having something like this in your home – in my opinion – outweighs any perceived benefit, especially when there are countless Lead-free mug choices out there.
