All accessible components of this PlanetBox water bottle were tested with an XRF instrument. Destructive testing was not used (the product was not forcibly disassembled for testing beyond how it would come apart in normal use by a child).
It is possible (based on my previous experience with this brand and style of water bottle) that there is Lead in a normally inaccessible component of the bottle. Specifically, I suspect (based on my experience with this type of bottle and based on the advertising for this product – see below) that there is possibly a leaded sealing dot under the plastic end cap.
[UPDATE: One of my readers just informed me that the company told her that as of April 2017 PlanetBox stopped using the Lead sealing dot, however I have yet to confirm this personally as I would need to disassemble a unit to do so and don’t have access to one to disassemble. If someone would like to send me one to disassemble and test more comprehensively, I would love to do that!]
I find it interesting that this particular California-based company (in their language on their Amazon ad) uses the specific language “safe from BPA, Lead and phthalates” and do not call the product “Lead-free.”
This is actually responsible advertising and is unlike many other brands of insulated stainless steel water bottles (including Pura Kiki) that engage in using false advertising statements that either directly claim (or imply) their product is Lead-free when it is not.
With what amounts to misleading language and labeling, customers assume many of these types of products are literally Lead-free — when there can be, in fact, Lead (in extremely high concentrations) in a sealing dot under the pressed-on bottom cap [used to seal the vacuum formed between the two layers of stainless steel]. With water bottles for adults some are marketed as “Lead Free” and the Lead is not even hidden under a cap or painted coating! [LINK]
Important Note: While many manufacturers claim that these Lead sealing dots are “inaccessible in normal use”, in several designs employing this type of construction, we have seen many cases where the caps have in fact easily popped off of the bottle, potentially exposing the bare Lead dots to children’s probing fingers – and mouths!
If you choose to buy this PlanetBox product (or other stainless steel water bottles featuring this type of construction) please be aware of this concern.
If the bottom cap falls off at all (or becomes compromised in any way) dispose of the product or return it to the company. You can confirm if the dot on the bottom is Lead by testing it with a LeadCheck® swab. Below is an image of a Lead sealing dot on another brand of bottle [Corkcicle®, in this case], for your reference:
