This is a little ceramic dish used for grating garlic, ginger, peppers, nutmeg, carrots, shallots, chocolate, citrus zest, hard cheeses, etc. The conclusion I would draw from the XRF test results listed below is that the glaze on this item appears to be lead-free and is masking the (very trace levels of) lead in the base clay/substrate. The glaze also appears to have traces of cadmium (not in all tests) and this is within safe levels by all current standards.

When tested with an XRF instrument this white glazed “The Grate Plate” garlic grater (Made in USA) had the following readings:
Unglazed clay base of plate (tested from underside):
- Lead (Pb): 102 +/- 14 ppm [This is considered very low, trace lead, not an added ingredient to the clay and is a level that is essentially considered safe by all standards – within the margin of error.]
- Cadmium (Cd): Non-Detect / Negative
- Mercury (Hg): Non-Detect / Negative
- Arsenic (As): Non-Detect / Negative
- Tin (Sn): 141 +/- 15 ppm
- Iron (Fe): 4,695 +/- 285 ppm
- Vanadium (V): 351 +/- 66 ppm
- Titanium (T): 4,348 +/- 231 ppm
- Platinum (Pt): 80 +/- 36 ppm
Bumpy surface in center of plate (white glazed side/ thicker glaze area):
- Lead (Pb): Non-Detect / Negative
- Cadmium (Cd): 33 +/- 13 ppm [Same note as with lead above, trace in the glaze – considered safe by all standards. Level confirmed with multiple tests.]
- Mercury (Hg): Non-Detect / Negative
- Arsenic (As): Non-Detect / Negative
- Tin (Sn): 2,175 +/- 105 ppm
- Zinc (Zn): 151 +/- 37 ppm
- Copper (Cu): 291 +/- 67 ppm
- Iron (Fe): 2,075 +/- 289 ppm
- Vanadium (V): 152 +/- 52 ppm
- Titanium (Ti): 594 +/- 100 ppm
- Indium (In): 46 +/- 18 ppm
- Zirconium (Zr): 14,700 +/- 500 ppm
- Platinum (Pt): 162 +/- 67 ppm
