Hey friends!
My good friend Carissa Bonham (Creative Green Living) wrote a new book “Proven Techniques For Keeping Healthy Chickens” [including “101 all natural tips & tricks”].
Fun Fact: I collaborated with Carissa to create a section in this book about protecting your backyard flock from being lead-poisoned.
We’re both pretty sure this is the only book about raising chickens available for sale today that even mentions lead-poisoning (although if you find another, please let us know ;-).)
If you yourself have chickens at home, please check out Carissa’s new book – on Amazon or in “brick & mortar” stores (who doesn’t love any excuse for an afternoon trip to Powell’s?!) This book has simple yet innovative tips for you to make sure your efforts to raise backyard hens are successful at keeping your birds safe and – most important – at keeping them healthy.
While this is written for an adult audience (it is not a child’s picture book, although the pictures are fabulous!), in my opinion all of Carissa’s work is accessible to children as well – especially older children working independently (including home-schoolers.) I would definitely recommend this book if you are helping your children to learn about animal husbandry through the experience of raising a backyard flock. With my kids I think it’s always good for them to have a helpful book from a trusted source (vs. just “googling” everything!) to guide them through the process (whatever it is that they are up to.)

I’ve been having a lot of fun collaborating with others (via books or blogs) on writing projects like this. If you are working on a book (or an article) and want to put together a chapter about lead (Pb) as it relates to your topic, please give me a holler. TamaraRubin@mac.com
As always, thank you for reading and for sharing my posts.
