In February of 2018 I posted on Facebook that I had found trace levels of cadmium (at amounts that were considered safe by all standards) in silicone menstrual cups, and specifically two different menstrual cups from the brand “Lena” had each tested positive for trace cadmium. This level of cadmium in “medical grade” silicone products has been consistent across all similar types of products I have tested. This is testing done with an XRF instrument, which is distinctly different than digestive testing or other testing methodologies.
Here is the initial response from Lena, posted on my Facebook page when they found out about my findings. This comment from them set off what we are fondly referring to as #MenstrualCupGate2018!!!!

Hi Tamara,
Have you ever tested a menstrual cup that’s made of TPE and not silicone?
