What do you mean by “newer”? I have Corning French White that I purchased about twenty years ago.
Hi Gayle!
Vintage = 20+ years old. I usually reserve “newer” for anything made in the past 5 or 10 years. This piece was tested in 2014 and was newer at that time, so possibly as old as 2009? I really cannot say beyond that.
Tamara
Thank you for your work! I have this piece (2009) but its rim got chipped in a move. To your knowledge is it still safe to use or is the exposed inner material going to leech problematic chemicals out when exposed to heat in the oven? I’m breastfeeding so I’m hyper alert…
I emailed Corelle/Corning last week to ask about French White from 1987. Here is the “response” I got: Thank you for contacting Corelle Brands,
We appreciate your concern. Corelle Brands values the safety of its products. You will be comforted to know that we routinely test our (Corelle)® Corningware products for harmful lead or cadmium content at certified, internationally-recognized third-party testing laboratories. The tests are conducted using protocols developed by the National Institute for Standards that form the basis for industry standards and regulatory testing mandates for lead or cadmium leachate in tableware, including mugs. (Lead content that is not a leachate poses no health risks). We are unable to share testing data with you as it is proprietary. We wish to assure you, however, that our testing confirms that (Corelle)® Corningware products comply with all applicable federal and state safety regulations, including those relating to lead and other heavy metals content, and they are safe to use in a manner consistent with their use and care instructions.
Any vintage or older items would have met the standards of their time.
Sincerely,
Jacob

Wow! Thank you for sharing this. This is EXCELLENT BS’ing on their part! Gah!

Right?!!!
My thoughts exactly!!!
So is french white ok to use?
I also would like to know if French White is ok! We were gifted ours in 2004 for our wedding and as I am moving toward greening my kitchen, I figured they were safer than the metals we were cooking in (aluminum and such)…but now I am curious! I am ok with getting rid of anything with lead (in fact, today I am disposing of my entire set of vintage Syracruse plates, cups, bowls, servingware and the rest because of the lead levels and replacing them with the IKEA white dishes, so if the White French Corning is found with lead, I’ll happily replace those too.
Hi Michelle, so I believe “French White” is a color and not a pattern or style – so I cannot say for sure, as Lead-content varies from pattern to pattern and year-of-manufacture to year-of-manufacture. Most plain white undecorated corning dishes are either going to be Lead-free or Lead-safe (below 90 ppm) when tested with an XRF Instrument. There are some exceptions to that however. I have tested some of their soup mugs and it seems like certain years of their soup mugs may be very high lead regardless of the color of the item.
Here is the “Corning” category on the blog for you to scroll through:

Since your Corning Casserole Category includes only decorated Corning casseroles, is my white Corningware “Creations” Stoneware casserole safe? (The CorningWare Creations bakeware collection was produced from 2004 to 2010. Originally introduced in a choice of Denim or Khaki, the CorningWare Creations line later added Amethyst, Emerald, Onyx, Ruby, Sapphire and White Diamond. This information comes from https://www.microwavecookingforone.com/Corningware/CorningwareCreations.php )
Thanks
Hi Tamara, appreciate all the info you share here! Just FYI, French White is a pattern name, not a color. It is the pattern of the oval casserole dish you have posted above.
I was just gifted a new set of these for Christmas 2021. Why are they not listed as reccomended or on your Amazon link uf the are free from contaminates and safe to use? Did you possibly test one of the glass lids that go with these dishes?
Do you have a link of which to buy to the specific Corning French White model Casserole dishes that have been tested as lead/cadmium heavy metal free? (Not just compliant)
I have a set of Corningware French White stoneware Grab it Bowls 15oz (bowl with small handle).
Could you tell me if it has been tested for heavy metals? Thank you
Are the current French White oval Corningware with glass tops sold as set in 2024 on Amazon in 2024 by Amazon & shipping from Amazon lead & heavy metal safe? I have used Corningware for years as my go to product for reheating in microwave and often reheating & cooking in the oven. IAfter reading your article getting rid of spice of life & few other patterns. I like the glass lids that Corningware has when I use in the microwave versus a plastic lid because I’m trying to avoid microplastics . If French white current Corningware not good, do you have a recommendation of what I can replace all the vintage Corningware for use in the microwave & oven?
