Noritake Stoneware, Made in Japan plate: tested negative for lead! #Woot!
Please note: MOST of the vintage Noritake I have tested has been positive for high levels of lead. When it comes to the relative safety of vintage dishware, you really cannot extrapolate simply from a brand name.

Hi – I’m wondering which pattern this was and how old is considered vintage? I have Noritake Stonewear which I believe is the Watercress pattern from the 80’s. I’m hoping it’s safe because I LOVE it. 🙂

Hi Lindsay, thank you for commenting. All of the information I have about a pattern or piece is in the blog post. Sorry I don’t have more details. Vintage is generally considered 20+ years old or older. Noritake can go either way.

Hi! This Noritake pattern (white with royal blue rim) is called Fjord. It was also made with a sailboat motif, which is called Running Free. The serving pieces for Fjord accessorize Running Free. This stoneware was also made in other colors, such as white/brown and black/white and other motifs. Ca. 1980. Delighted to see Fjord is lead-free. Thank you!

I have a set of Noritake Ivory China. I bought basic pieces and received the rest as wedding gifts in 1974. The pattern is “Norma”. The Pattern has been retired for many years. I used it on Sunday’s for a while when the boys were younger, all grown now, and on some holidays. I love this china but am concerned now that it contains lead. Is this one you have tested?

Thank you so much for the work that you are doing. Most people don’t think about lead in their plates unless they are health conscious. I’m an RN so I know about the hazards of lead and other toxins. I have Noritake Aspen Nights made in 1991-1992 that I’ve only used for special occasions. I’m suspecting it’s high in lead since your definition of vintage is over 20 years old. Since there are so many patterns, it’s impossible to test all patterns. I’m probably going to have to let this set go to be safe and get a newer set. Do the newer sets state that they are lead and cadmium free?

Thank you this is very helpful. I just purchased the Noritake Penelope set at an estate sale. It is so lovely and I look forward to tea parties with my girls, and then suddenly thought given the age. There could be a risk of lead. Have you ever encounter that in that pattern?

If it is from the 1970s it likely has unsafe levels of lead in the glaze on the food surface.
