#AskTamara: This question came up on Facebook in a group of mom-friends:
Q. What do you have in your emergency bag in the car?
A. Since we don’t own a car, I keep stuff in my bike bag. Here’s some of the things I keep in my bike bag (and bring with me pretty much all the time)… Note: My husband jokes that I would win on “Let’s Make A Deal!” (isn’t that the old tv show?) where the host asks you to see if you have x, y or z in your purse:
- thumb tacks
- scotch tape
- paper clips
- paper
- pens
- tissues (it turns out I have three packs in there right now!)
- dental floss
- sword flossers
- inhaler (Albuterol)
- an real acorn top (ask me!)
- ear plugs (hearing protectors)
- rubber bands
- assorted game dice
- various plastic animals, plastic coins and toys
- a cardboard coffee cup cozy (you never know when that might come in handy!)
- a pencil eraser (for some reason I have two right now)
- a set of sidewalk chalk
- a LeadCheck swab or two (usually kept in with the chalk – I’m out right now :-()
- reusable plastic straws (recycled from popsicle sticks)
- hair bands
- nail clippers
- tweezers (two sets: hair and splinter)
- bandaids (various sizes)
- Neosporin (we are like Neosporin addicts over here!)
- Advil (must.always.have.advil!)
- flashlight or bike light
- small deck of playing cards
- small bubbles with wand
- rocket balloons (at least two)
- thumb drive (you never know when you will need one of those!)
- clean empty zip lock baggies (at least two)
- a picture of my mother shortly before she passed away (sitting with my two eldest boys and her husband.)
- two plastic knives
- ice chips (yum!)
- natural organic peppermints
- fruit leather
- honey sticks
- xylitol lolly pops
- a couple of LeadSafeAmerica buttons (oh! why are those still there?)
- a bunch of Portland Bicycle Trailer Company buttons!
- black eyeliner
- lipstick (just in case! – but have almost never used)
- black mascara
- chapstick – for kids
- lip balm – for me
- deodorant – paste
- perfume – solid
- lighter
- matches (business card from local blacksmith!)
- hair brush
- rain-poncho
- colored pencil selection (2 bags for some reason right now!)
- cough drops
- $20 cash (rarely have this but try to!)
- A handful of coins (just in case the kids HAVE TO get something from a vending machine!)
- a handful of business cards
- natural hemp wick spool (this has many users and is also a good toy for kids!)
- and last minute I add in: My phone
- My wallet
- My keys (bike lock/ shed)
As a result of how tightly I pack this little bag I sort of have a collection of (fetish for) unusual and interesting small reusable zipper bags! :-).

Have to ask about the acorn top??
Hi Tamara,
I have been looking for safe earplugs (or even earmuffs) to block out noise; i can’t use silicone.
The link for earplugs in this article goes to Mack’s pink soft foam earplugs. Is Amazon using the correct link? Please advise, as i’m thinking this isn’t accurate since they are foam. Thank you
