69,900 ppm lead – Franciscan Plate
Vintage Dishes

For context: Items intended for children are required by current legislation to be under 90 ppm lead in the paint / glaze or coating,

Dishes (especially vintage dishes!) are not regulated for total lead content (via XRF reading.).

I personally stay away from Franciscan dishes at all cost.  If you fed me dinner on vintage Franciscan dishware in your home, I would refuse to eat it and would recommend throwing the food away (especially something acidic like spaghetti with sauce!)

I have tested MANY Franciscan pieces and not only are they high positive with an XRF, but they also almost always test positive with a LeadCheck swab (depending on how recently they have been washed or dusted.)

  1. I have Harvest Gold Franciscan Ware – it was our wedding pattern. Is this set safe? Also I use Fiesta ware for daily ware – old colors – periwinkle blue, cobalt blue, old pale yellow, old green. Are these dishes safe?

  2. Curious if the lead is in the glaze, the paint, or the pottery itself? I ended up with combined sets of these from both my mother and my husband’s grandparents and have been eating off of them my entire life and now my daughter’s too. My mother wore all the shiny glaze off of her set of plates with Clomet trying to get the silverware scratch marks off. I was looking for a new blue set of dishes to go with our new kitchen colors, but I’ll be taking your advice and will be getting white Corelle now.

  3. Is Franciscan Hacienda Green dinnerware safe to eat on if it has always been hand washed and not put in the dishwasher or microwave?
