Lead Safe Mama, LLC’s “Lab Tested Safer Choices List” of toothpastes is below, please do read the following for context on this independent, third-party laboratory testing before choosing to purchase any of these products. Thank you!

  1. All of the toothpaste and tooth powder products we have tested to date have been chosen for testing and reporting by the Lead Safe Mama online community.
    • We have had about 2.3 million readers on our website each year for the past two years.
    • Lead Safe Mama community members nominate the products they would like tested (check out the “nominate” button above for more info on that process), and then Lead Safe Mama community members cover our costs for testing and reporting.
    • As a result, we have tested all types of toothpaste: children’s toothpastes, adult toothpastes, hydroxyapatite toothpastes, fluoride-free toothpastes, and fluoride-containing toothpastes.
    • We did not choose which products to test and report on — you (our online community) did.
    • Thank you to each and every person who has supported this initiative to date!
  2. Of the nearly 100 toothpaste and tooth powder products that have been tested and reported on to date through the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative, only eight have had test results (when tested with independent, third party laboratory testing — testing conducted by an accredited lab)  that were “non-detect” for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury and Arsenic.

  4. The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for each specific product.
    • To see the full, original lab report for any of these products, type the brand or product name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com and scroll down to the bottom of the related article. The original lab report can always be found at the very bottom of each related article. Most of our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.
    • This landing page is updated weekly (most weeks) and is a good page to bookmark and check back on periodically if you want the latest test results.
  5. Flavors tested (or specific variations tested) are noted in the list below (and on all of our related articles).
  6. Other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results.
  7. Test results only apply to the specific products pictured and linked on this page.
  8. Be careful not to purchase knock offs. The Miessence Toothpaste is out of stock on Amazon and must only be purchased directly from the manufacturer (they are an Australian company)
  9. Test results are PRODUCT SPECIFIC, not BRAND SPECIFIC.
    • One should never assume that all products from a specific brand are clean just because one or more products from that specific brand came back with clean test results. For example: The Weleda Children’s Tooth Gel tested positive for Lead, but the Weleda Salt Toothpaste (for adults) did not.
    • See the two graphics below  for examples & continue reading below the graphics. Thank you!
  10. We have tested and reported on nearly 100 toothpastes to date, to see a comparative chart with test results for most of those products, click here.

Products on our “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” list are retested periodically (annually if possible, or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean (non-detect for all, or safe-by-all standards) with a second round of lab analysis, it is removed from the list.
