Hello!

Good Evening!

As I mentioned earlier tonight, we currently have 446 paid Patreon Members contributing an average monthly gift of about $2.77 each. Thank you to each of these 446 friends for supporting our work in this way!

These 446 friends are contributing a combined total of $1,235 each month in support of the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative! Woot! We use this funding to subsidize the costs of testing and reporting for community-nominated products that have not yet been funded.

Our paid Patreon Membership levels start at just $1.18 per month and we currently have 147 members contributing at that level.

All Lead Safe Mama Patreon Members (paid and free) have access to the SAME information, as none of the information we provide is ever behind a paywall.

As contributions to our GoFundMe campaigns have recently slowed down a bit, we’re adding a new (hopefully simple) way to help fund the costs of testing and reporting into the mix (in addition to our open GoFundMe campaigns for specific products).

Here’s the plan: We’re going to set out a goal for the number of paid Patreon members we need to reach, and once we reach it, we will test and report on the promised product.

This Kirkland Cinnamon will be the first product we fund in this way this month. As soon as we reach 550 paid Patreon members, we will test and report on this product. It’s up to you! Can you be one of 104 new members today by contributing just $1.18 a month in support of this work? (Or more, whatever you can afford!)

The link to join us is here: http://www.patreon.com/LeadSafeMama.

Let’s get this cinnamon tested!
Help us reach 550 paid Patreon members.

Thank you!

  1. This gives test results for the Organic version of this brand. https://www.tastingtable.com/1664933/lead-amounts-costco-kirkland-cinnamon. And here’s the September 2024 Consumer Reports article about it, which says that Kirkland Signature Organic Saigon Cinnamon has .80 PPM of lead: https://www.consumerreports.org/health/food-contaminants/high-lead-levels-in-cinnamon-powders-and-spice-mixtures-a4542246475/ . They have an interesting perspective in that they say that it’s OK to ingest 1/4 teaspoon of that per day.

    1. Right – and part of what we are doing is trying to give straight science without the “ok to eat lead” white washing of the results — a perspective that is – frustratingly – engaged in by so many consumer advocacy organizations.

800 ppb is not ok (is never okay in any food), but we cannot parrot their results – we always try to publish our own.

Plus things can change in a year (and can change batch-to-batch).

800 ppb could be also be 1,000 ppb (1 ppm) within a reasonable margin of error, so additional testing (by a very accurate lab) is always a good thing.

Thanks for sharing those links here!

  2. Can I just Venmo an annual lump sum to count as monthly Patreon $, rather than give credit card info or pull from PayPal each month?

    1. You could! We can count your contribution towards this testing, just let us know (with a note with your contribution). Our Venmo is @LeadSafeMama (4 digits: 3182), our PayPal is Testing@LeadSafeMama.com, and our Zelle (preferred because it is fee free): is 503-702-2708

      Thank you so much!

      1. Great, thanks. I would also love to see the supposedly lowest level Consumer tested product (Whole Foods brand) get tested!

  3. I’m likely missing this info somewhere but how much is a food test and which lab do you use? I have cinnamon bark I want to test.

    1. The lab we use does not work directly with consumers — however you can buy a test to test food yourself on this link #aflink: https://amzn.to/4hlPPSD

Here’s details about our costs – which includes both testing and reporting:

If you wanted to sponsor having us test and report on a single product (having us publish the reports, to help hold the manufacturers accountable) our cost is currently $495.00 per product.

Here are all of the cinnamon products we have tested and reported on to date:
