In case you care: these are the masks we have chosen to get for our family now that we have Omicron to be concerned about…

These are the masks my husband has chosen for our family (after he did TON of research) now that Omicron is taking over. We have one kiddo taking in-person college classes this semester and he is medically fragile so it is very important to us that he has the most protective mask for his time in class. 1/5/2021 UPDATE:

We just got our box of masks in the mail and the kids tried them out. They are VERY comfortable – they don’t smell like anything (we are very scent-sensitive in this house) and the kids each said “wow these are so much better” – we also tested them for fit on our adult-sized-man-children and they fit great and with various tests for air leakage we could not detect any leakage of air coming out of the sides (even with very heavy breathing and blowing.) Click through for the Lead Safe Mama affiliate link for these. [We also confirmed the vendor was a real company selling authentic 3M product / not counterfeit product – when we chose the link to share.]

[If you click on ANY of our affiliate links prior to beginning ANY of your Amazon shopping we may receive a small percentage of what you spend at no extra cost to you. You don’t even need to buy what we recommend for this to happen… just start your shopping with a click on a Lead Safe Mama affiliate link and – no matter what you choose to buy – some money may get sent our way in support of our independent consumer goods testing and childhood Lead poisoning prevention advocacy work… money that otherwise might go to Jeff Bezos, so … win win win!]

  1. N95 masks provide the most protection. Cloth masks are not very effective even with a filter between 2 layers of dense cotton. For Canadian shoppers, CBC Marketplace in Canada has done extensive testing of N95 & KN94 masks.
    Thanks Tamara.

  2. Hi Tamara,
I’m concerned about Ethylene Oxide (sterilisation process) in most masks.
Do you know anything about this ?

    1. I am aware that there are many concerns for synthetic materials and I am present to those concerns but have not done a deep dive into each possible concern. That said – I think we each need to weigh the risks and benefits of these things for our family and unfortunately in many communities COVID-19 is surging this winter. When you have disabled kiddos (immunocompromised kiddos) as I do, you do your best. For me that means limiting the time they spend wearing masks (and specifically limiting the time they spend in high-occupancy locations and situations where they might need to wear masks: busses, airplanes, concerts, etc.) That also means selecting the best mask for the particular application, whenever possible.

      Tamara
