Melissa & Doug Dominoes for kids: Lead-free, Mercury Free, Cadmium-Free, Arsenic-Free (as expected!)

Introduction:

Tamara Rubin is a Federal award winning independent advocate for consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention. She is also a mother of Lead-poisoned children. She began testing consumer goods for toxicants in 2009, and was the parent-advocate responsible for finding Lead in the popular fidget spinner toys in 2017. She uses XRF testing (a scientific method used by the Consumer Product Safety Commission) to test consumer goods for metallic toxicants (including Lead, Cadmium, Mercury and Arsenic). 1. Thank you, Tamara! Should it be a concern that the orange paint has some antimony to a point that the dominos should be taken away?

    1. Hi there. This has not been evaluated for safety by any agency (the potential implications of trace Antimony in children’s toys.) The Antimony is not on the toy but on the box itself and it is very low. I would just not let the kiddo play with the box if that is a concern for you (I personally would probably not let my child play with the box.)

  2. Hi, my 2yr old has a few Melissa & Doug toys. Should I toss them? Or just monitor her well when she plays incase she gets tempted to bite them?

    1. I definitely would keep any of the wooden ones that are painted out of her mouth. Otherwise they are very safe in general. Many of the designs are not painted but instead are applied paper decals – so those are good options too with Melissa and Doug.
