This was super disappointing!
5,562 ppm lead & 69 ppm cadmium.
This is the reading on the white writing (including the logo) which is on the outside of the glass canister. This writing often wears off with washing and normal use on similar products painted in a similar fashion (Green Sprouts sippy cups, glass measuring cups, glass lids to crock pots). This was tested with an XRF instrument. The amount of lead that is toxic in an item intended for children is 90 ppm lead and higher. Lead paint is allowed on kitchenware and consumer goods not intended for children. The CPSC does not consider this a violation.

I’m looking for a double wall French press. Do you have any recommendations?
Tamara says
I don’t, although I have had a stainless single serving double wall one that was great – I don’t know the brand right now, I will take a look for it! Here are my French Press posts: https://tamararubin.com/category/french-press/

Curious if you know the brand of your stainless French press, I just broke my 5th glass one and can’t find any stainless ones that aren’t insulated. Thank you!

Looking for uninsulated bc I am worried about leaded sealing dots. I trust whatever one you use, thank you!

I very recently started researching leaded and heavy metal products and came across your blog and realized how many products we use that are most likely leaded. I’m so grateful for your blog/research so I can start getting rid of things.
Anyway- we switched recently from regular drip to a French press and hated that most presses didn’t keep coffee warm long enough for us so I came across this beautiful matte black Espro double walled stainless steel press (which cost me almost $200). It’s sleek and sits in my countertop keeping my coffee warm for hours— and sludge free btw because it also has a double filter. I love it so much. This morning It occurred to me to look underneath the press for a lead solder – and there it was….covered with a measly sticker.
I then began to google looking for any reviews or company info that confirmed my findings and came up empty except for ONE Amazon review from someone who also recognized the solder and tested it positive for lead. I’m so furious now!! Wanted to share this Espro product on your blog in case anyone is looking to make a French press purchase.

Hi Kirstin!
Thank you so much for commenting! Yes – the moment I started reading your comment (and read “insulated stainless steel”) I sort of knew what the punchline would be! Yikes! I wish these companies would get it together. It might be a good idea to mention this product concept to Hydroflask as they are handling the sealing of their insulated vessels in a lead-free way! For others who are reading this comment it seems like this is the product you are referring to (this is my affiliate link, but I don’t recommend the product of course!): https://amzn.to/3j9VOeB

Hi Tamara,
So disappointing regarding the Bodum french press. Do you think their double walled glass coffee mugs are safe? See link: https://www.bodum.com/us/en/10604-10us4-bistro
Thanks!

So I just received my Bodum double walled glass coffee mugs in the mail and on the very bottom outside of the glass it says Patents visit http://www.bodum.com and Designs registered by Pi-design plus a Bodum logo in white. Do you think their white writing is lead free since they are no or is there no guarantee? I really wanted a double walled glass mug and the ones you have linked by calibyou (which when googled came up with something about fakery products on amazon) is no longer available. Do you know of any other double walled glass mugs that could be lead free?
Thanks!
Holly

I forgot to add that as well as the white painted logo, there is a small silicone like stopper positioned in the middle of the bottom of the glass acting like a plug hole. Not sure if that is good either. Oh the journey continues.

Hi Tamara,
I’ve been on the hunt for 12 oz double walled clear glass coffee mugs after seeing that the Bodum mugs have painted white writing on the bottom and silicone vent hole (is that toxic too?). I’ve narrowed down two that I’m interested in–do they look fine to you as well? Thank you!

Do you believe this to be for the black bodum French press too? 🙁

Hi I would also like to know about the Bodum double walled clear glass mugs. Does the white writing mean they contain lead? Does that fact that the writing is on the outer glass matter rather than on the inner? Would love to know! Thank you for all you do!

Are Bodum’s glass dishes (sold 2001 and prior) leaded or lead-free? They have no markings, but how can I know if they are borosilicate or leaded glass?

I’m so disappointed my Bodum French press, a wedding gift decades ago, looks to have white leaded paint on it for the logo. Now looking for a safer alternative.

Hi Tamara, Thank you for your amazing work and concern for others! I’m curious about the Bodum clear glass mugs too. Amazon & Pottery Barn both claim the double walled mugs are lead free. However, I cannot find any lead free claims on Bodum’s site, and they have not replied to my email inquiry. Do you accept items for testing? If so, I’m willing to ship one to you. Thanks again! Kathleen

They have gone back and forth over the years. They had lead-free painted logos for a while and then switched back to lead painted logos.
I think they are currently Leaded.
